Cheese and Wine Day 25th July 2025

24 July, 2025

To celebrate National Wine and Cheese Day, we asked our cheesemongers to highlight their favourite pairings on the counter right now!

Tom Richardson, Retail Sales Manager: The Domaine de Saissac Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 is from a tiny estate that lies in the heart of the Languedoc. It's well structured, with a nice jammy quality with notes of Bramble. It's also got a cedar-spice note which is delicious paired with Rollright as the cheese is wrapped in Spruce bark which adds a lovely herbal, woody note to the cheese.

Helen Ashton, Restaurants Trade Account Manager: I adore bright and fresh pairing and the absolute classic of a Sauvignon Blanc, like this Mont Joie, with a goat's cheese is hard to beat. Domaine Henri Bourgeois was founded during the 1950s in the village of Chavignol in the heart of the Sancerre wine region - an area also famed for it's goat's cheese. For a british take on the classic, I have selected a Sinodun, with its mousseline texture and light salinity, this elegant welsh cheese sings when pairs with zippy white wines.

Dan Bliss, Buyer: There's an old adage, that what grows together, goes together. I, personally adore sparkling wine with cheese and definitely have a soft spot for mountains cheeses, so I was really excited to discover the Tissot-Marie Crement de Jura Blancs de Blancs. With notes of white flowers and almond it's pairs beautifully with Comté Androuet. Matured for around 20 months in the old military forts of St Antoine, the  cheese has a complementary brightness and nuttiness.

Sophie Welsh, our Canterbury Shop Manager: I love championing Kentish produce. Biddenden Vineyards is Kent’s oldest commercial vineyard, established in 1969. The vineyard is set on gentle south-facing slopes and grows 10 varieties of grapes over 22 acres, all hand picked and pressed on the same day. As fragrant as an English hedgerow, this refreshing white shines a spotlight on the distinctive but little-known Ortega variety. Lightly creamy with lime cordial flavours, its really compliments a buttery Cheddar style cheese like Winterdale, from the North Downs of Kent.

Jazz Reeves, Quality and Operations Manager: The floral, and light white fruit notes and gentle fizz of the Prosecco are the perfect juxtaposition to the milky, rich and silky textured St. Jude. An elegant pairing for a Summer evening.  Le Colture has been in the hands of the Ruggeri family since the 1500s and specialises in making high quality sparkling wines. Pale in colour with a delicate, fine mousse. With aromas of white flowers, citrus, orchard fruit, with a hint of warm brioche, Prosecco is delightful with many styles of cheese.
