English Wine week with Biddenden Vineyards
24 June, 2025This week we are celebrating English Wine Week! Did you know as of 2024, we now have over 1000 Vineyards in England? And the quality of wine made in this country goes from strength to strength - such an exciting time if you enjoy eating and drinking locally.
In honour of English Wine week, we are spotlighting the delicious pairing of Biddenden Ortega with Rachel from Whitelake Cheese in Somerset. This unusual washed rinded goat's cheese is beautifully nutty with the most satisfyingly toothsome texture. If you enjoy wines like Reisling of Gewertztramminer, we think you will enjoy the little known grape Ortega. The pairing has a great balance of acidity.
As fragrant as an English hedgerow, this refreshing white shines a spotlight on the distinctive but little-known Ortega variety. Lightly creamy with lime cordial flavours, this is a perfect lunchtime wine or sundowner.
Biddenden Vineyards is Kent’s oldest commercial vineyard, established in 1969. The vineyard is set on gentle south-facing slopes and grows 10 varieties of grapes over 22 acres. Harvest begins in late September and runs through to early November. All grapes are picked by hand and pressed on the same day. All wines are estate grown and bottled. We are thrilled that we have such incredible Vineyards on our doorstep, particularly with our shop in the heart of Canterbury.
At Paxton & Whitfield, we work really closely with fellow Royal Warrant Holders Corney & Barrow. Established in 1780, they are experts in fine wine and share our passion for searching out small producers and delicious products.
