The Honour of Holding a Royal Warrant and What It Means for Paxton & Whitfield

04 August, 2025

At Paxton & Whitfield, we are proud to hold a Royal Warrant of Appointment to His Majesty The King. This prestigious recognition is not just a symbol of our legacy, but also a testament to our commitment to craftsmanship, quality, and excellence—values that have defined us since 1742.

What is a Royal Warrant?

A Royal Warrant of Appointment is a distinguished mark of recognition granted to businesses that supply goods or services to the Royal Household. Companies that hold this Warrant are permitted to display the Royal Arms on their products and marketing materials, signifying that they meet the highest standards in service, quality, and craftsmanship. The Royal Warrant is granted for up to five years and is awarded to a named individual within the company, known as the Grantee, who ensures proper use of the Royal Arms.

The practice of granting Royal Warrants has been in place for centuries, originating in the 15th century when the Lord Chamberlain formally appointed tradespeople to provide goods and services to the Royal Court. Today, the Royal Warrant is a symbol of distinction, awarded by the Monarch and certain senior members of the Royal Family, HRH The Princess of Wales, who will take over granting Warrants in 2026.

Paxton & Whitfield’s Legacy with Royal Warrants

At Paxton & Whitfield, our journey with Royal Warrants began in 1850 when we were first appointed as cheesemongers to Queen Victoria. Since then, we have proudly held Royal Warrants to several members of the Royal Family, including HM King Edward VII, HM King George V, HM King George VI, HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, and HRH The Prince of Wales.

In 2024, we were honoured to receive our current Royal Warrant from His Majesty The King, solidifying our position as one of the UK's premier cheesemongers. This distinction reinforces our commitment to the finest artisan cheeses, crafted with care and dedication using traditional methods passed down through generations.
